Emily Vargas is a doctoral candidate in Psychology at the University of Michigan. She examines inequality, discrimination, and prejudice in health and medical contexts.

Vargas uniquely utilizes feminist research methodologies to explore how individual identities (e.g., gender, race, socioeconomic status), inform doctor-patient interactions, psychological health inequalities, accessibility to healthcare, and health outcomes. Her research has examined:

  • Ways of improving psychological health in women undergoing cancer surgery

  • Impact of identity bias on doctors, and patients

  • Surgeon well-being

  • Cultural factors and patient psychological health

  • Longitudinal psychological health in women of color
